The tide of MMOs is finally changing.

There will be a world where players rule. A place where almost all quests are created and controlled by players and not to entertain you or give you the WoW equivalent of grade school busy work. But a world where quests add to the game and specifically to a players pocket. It will be a world where NO guard exists unless a player put them there, pays their salary and gives them orders.

There will be a place where every building is the result of a players time and even if a player leaves the game that building will stand unless another player destroys it.

There will be an economy based solely on the players. No artificial gold will be fed into the world ever. Quests will always be unique because players will create them and set up their npcs to run their quests even if their offline.

Noone will be immortal and PvP combat will choose who rules the servers or who dies on the servers. The best items in the game will be provided and built and enchanted by players. Controlling areas will take strategy, will power and skill.

Mastering the highest orders of magic will not be the same for anyone and each person will learn magic differently. Each path of magic is unique and some are born with magic while others must spend countless hours of study. Magical paths can never be planned and must be explored anew with each iteration of a character set to pursue its power.

Even the simple creatures that roam the game will be under the thumb of the players. Kill all the deer in the game an no more shall deer exist. Players will either protect their lands and animals or lose them.

The politics of the game will be run by players and with real player enforced benefits and repercussions.

The concept of the only thing to do in game is level my character and get better stuff will be gone. While you can always get better at anything you practice and can always get better stuff the game will not revolve solely around this. What you do in game will matter much more.

Fake Instanced PvP quake type zones will be replaced with real lands that players can conquer and protect or perhaps just plunder. For amusing fake battles Arenas could be built where players could agree to fight in a non lethat manner but Accidents happens and sometimes players lie,

The winds of change are blowing. A new game is coming. One that doesn't feel like something your kid sister would play and one where if even you play but an hour a week your hour could have more effects on the server you play in then in any other game made to date.

The game you are looking for is called Eve.  Of course, you probably already know that, and are just hoping to convince a few noobs to go to low sec space on a "quest", so you and 5 of your gate camping buddies can blow them up.

I think it MMO will get better in the next 20 years...

Then after that I would guess the virutal reality system would be incorporated into MMO, then it'll be something to dream about.

    Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR

Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

Sorry bud, I doubt Darkfall will ever come out :- Did you come up with that generalization all by yourself? or are you listening to all the nay-sayers.

Darkfall is coming whether you think its vaporware or not.

Don't get me wrong man, I would love to play Darkfall and I would love for you to prove me wrong, but Darkfall's been in production for what? Like seven years? At first I was a believer, but yes, after listening to all the nay-sayers, I had a change of heart. I want to believe, but I just refuse to until I see some true proof.

Not to be rude, but Are you a developer? or maybe a staff personal? Oh I know you must work there cleaning the toilets and overheard that Darkfall will release no matter what. Honestly How can you or anyone else know if it will come out at all? Your opinion is no better then the people saying it is vaporware.

I'm personally hoping Darkfall does release but  as with any MMO it could really go two ways. Lets just hope it goes the way we want it to.

I'm hoping whatever Curt Schillings is cooking up over at 38 Studios will at least raise the bar to the next level.

    That's my hope anyway.

It makes me sad when I think about how old I'm going to be by the time virtual reality becomes a dominant medium for games. I'll probably be complaining about these whipper-snappers who have the reflexes of an adrenaline jacked-up spider monkey kicking my butt in PvP.

You're right, Lunar_Knight, it's not a good feeling.  And if that 50-years-until-VR prediction is accurate, I won't be around to play it.    It's why I'm always lamenting the demise of turn-based wargaming or the coming "action" or "tectical" style MMOs.  I get pwn'd enough in RPG-style combat.  As I always say, it sucks getting old.  But, the world marches on.  VR should've been here already, at least in some form, but not enough $$$ quickly and easily enough can be envisioned by the Corporate World, so the research has been sent packing along with AI, Natural Language Processing, et al.  We're not really that far beyond MIT's work in the late '50s.

And the OP's post would also require some Corporate Sponsor to look beyond WoW numbers as the Holy Grail.  Hmmm...could take longer than 50 years for THAT to happen.

I think I feel the same as many other mmorpg'rs out there. We are waiting for something, and will play other games to fill the time and meet new people, but there is currently nothing on the market even close to what we really want to play.

We are craving a complete form of escapism, a virtual life and we wan't to be as unique in that world as we are in our day to day lives. Second life does give you that level of being unique, you really can build anything down to your own hair style and upload your own artwork  but the problem is its not a game, its a social tool. It fits many of the things we want in a game but there is no objectives as you get rich by pouring in your real life money and then trying to make a profit ingame from that. It does not hold me, as its not true escapism, its based on real life but without the social constraints.

I don't think I have the skills to articulate precisely what we want, but maybe a mix of some of the attributes of second life with the best fantasy / sci fi rpg game, and that might actually be getting close to next gen!

We can only wait for the good MMOs to be developed

Maybe, and only maybe it will change soon....

It would be nice if they could stop doing WoW clones and begin make those real complex MMOs instead. I think the years 2005-2007 will be rememberd as the dark ages for MMOs.

the problem with people creating their own quests is people could just easily give each other xp. I think the reward perhaps has to be something finite like gold or an item perhaps

I think I'll stick with playing games instead of 'doing work' thats all the OP's world sounds like to me.  More work ... lots of work...and if i wanted to never own a real house I might spend real dollars to build virtual things...pft not!
